Silver How is considered one of the most challenging trails in the “Easy” category, but the stunning views from the summit, which encompass Windermere, Rydal Water, Grasmere, and the surrounding hills, make an effort well worth it.
This route has multiple starting points, but starting in Grasmere provides the best scenic experience.
After reaching the summit, you can reward yourself with a delicious piece of Grasmere Gingerbread to cap off your hike.
The journey begins at the turning for Allan Bank, a National Trust property located in the village of Grasmere (Grid Ref NY 336 075).
From there, the track leads past Allan Bank and towards a farm, then follows a path marked for Silver How.
At Grid Ref NY 328 075, turn left onto a narrow, steep path.
Then, at Grid Ref NY 324 073, take another left onto a rugged path marked by a series of cairns serving as way-markers.
This path will take you to the summit at Grid Ref NY 324 066.
