The arduous trek to reach the top is worth it for the breathtaking views of Haweswater and the stunning, untamed landscapes reminiscent of a Tolkien story.
Start your hike by turning left at the end of the car park and following the signposted path towards Gatesgarth Pass.
The path is well-maintained and takes you through picturesque, serene landscapes.
At Grid Ref NY 473 093, turn right onto another well-maintained path and continue on this route as it veers left at Grid Ref NY 465 097 and leads you up the ridge.
The summit of Harter Fell is marked by a cairn comprised of stones and old ironworks.
From the summit, take the path to the right that leads down the ridge and through some rocky terrain.
Be cautious, as this section can be rough in places.
You will reach a wind shelter at NY 452 095, where you should turn right.
This path will take you to the stunning blue waters of Small Water, around its far side, and back to the car park.
Estimated Total Time: 5 – 6 hours (for ascent and descent)
