Scafell Pike

Here is a guide to help you plan your next hike on Scafell Pike:

The quickest and most straightforward route to climb Scafell Pike is a popular choice, especially among those taking on the Three Peaks Challenge and participating in Fell Running events.

Starting from the National Trust car park, you will cross Lingmell Gill over a bridge and pass by the Brackenclose climbing hut before crossing the gill again on a second bridge.

The path then follows along the side of Lingmell Gill for approximately one mile and rises steeply. At Grid Ref NY 202 073, you will come to a fork in the trail, where you should turn left.

Going right at this point will take you over loose scree, which can be challenging for inexperienced climbers.

The path to the summit continues over rocky terrain with loose boulders, veering to the right at Grid Ref NY 211 077, and is marked with cairns.

However, these can be hard to see during inclement weather.

Therefore, the quickest return journey is to retrace your steps down the same path.

If you’re looking for a longer route with scenic views, consider the Corridor Route.

Start by descending your route to the summit, but turn right at Grid Ref 212 076 onto the Corridor Route.

Follow this path until you reach Sty Head at Grid Ref NY 221 094, where you’ll need to turn left and pass by the Mountain Rescue stretcher box.

This route takes you along Lingmell Beck, with its multiple waterfalls, before reaching Wasdale Head and the village pub, a popular place to relax and refresh after your climb.

Note: This is a strenuous hike and should only be attempted by experienced walkers with a good fitness level.

Be sure to carry a map and compass, and know how to use them in case of poor visibility.

Always follow the Countryside Code and leave no trace of your visit.

Estimated Total Time: 5 – 6 hours (for ascent and descent)

Ideal for: Adults and teenagers with good physical fitness.

This guide should help you plan a safe, enjoyable, hard fell walk on Scafell Pike.

Remember to respect the environment and always put safety first. Happy hiking!
